What is the body mass index (BMI)?

The body mass index (BMI) is the result of a person’s weight divided by their height squared. It is a rough tool for figuring out whether you are at a healthy weight. Healthy weights are different for different people. The “healthy” weight score is different for men, women and children. It also differs according to your age. The averages are based on clinical data.

The BMI is a good general screening tool for weight-related health issues, but it can’t tell you how healthy you are overall, or how much your body fat percentage is. For example, someone with a muscular build might be in the “obese” category according to the BMI, even with little body fat, because the metric only accounts for height-to-weight ratio.
